The Bogong High Plains come alive in the summer with the colour of blooming wildflowers and regenerating forests.

Here is a selection of short walks for all levels in and around Falls Creek. A map of the walking trails can be found in the summer activity guide, which can be downloaded by clicking here.
Falls Creek also has a range of guided tours available, for more information please click here.

Wishing Well via the Aqueduct

6.2 kms (return) 1.5 hours

This walk begins at Snowland and takes you up Wombat’s Ramble to the Aqueduct and then right along the water-way around the top of the village and out to a little local secret called the Wishing Well. Fantastic views back to the village and across the valley.

Rocky Valley Lake via the Aqueduct

4.3 kms (return) 1 hour

Beginning at Snowland walk up Wombat’s Ramble and turn left onto the Aqueduct. Follow the water-way to the spectacular Rocky Valley Lake. Look for small trout in the water. These water-ways are nursery streams, they’re great spots for beginner ‘catch and release’ fishing.
Take a picnic or a bottle of wine out to Rocky Valley Lake. Bring your fishing rod and try your luck catching a wild trout. The lake fills up from snow melt and is a gorgeous spot on a still afternoon or evening.
For a shorter walk drive 800m past Windy Corner, park somewhere near the dam wall and walk from there.

Mountain & Castle (Mt McKay)

11 kms (return) 4 hours

A longer walk taking you from the village up the highest drivable road in Victoria to the peak of Mt McKay. The walk also takes you around Cloud 9 and the top of the Ruined Castle area — watch out for snow!

Falls Creek Falls

300m (return) 10 mins

A short easy walk to Falls Creek’s pretty waterfalls. From the village gateway walk down the Bogong High Plains Road 100 metres to the signposted trail head.

Historic Wallaces Hut

Check out one of Australia’s most famous and oldest mountain huts, registered with the National Trust. Built by the Wallace brothers in 1889 from snowgum, it's roof was replaced by the SEC when it was used as a worker's hut. It's now a wonderful historical monument in the high country.

Drive out past Windy Corner and across the Rocky Valley dam wall for approximately 12km until you see the marked signs to the hut. Park your car and from here it is an easy and very picturesque 750m walk into the hut.

Great Alpine Discovery Drive – Bright, Mt Beauty, Mt Bogong, Falls Creek, Bogong High Plains, Anglers Rest, Omeo, Dinner Plain, Mt Hotham, Harrietville and Bright. (240km, 4.5 hours).  (Bogong High Plains Road Touring Route)

As of midday on Tuesday 7th April '09 the Bogong High Plains Road between Falls Creek and Shannonvale (at the Omeo Highway) is now completely sealed. A six metre wide seal of bitumen has been laid on the full 36km of road, finally completing what will become one of the best touring loops in this country. The loop of 240km from Mount Beauty, Tawonga Gap, Harrietville, Mount Hotham, Dinner Plain, Omeo, Falls Creek and back to Mount Beauty will be known as the Alpine Discovery Drive.
The official opening will be in early May '09. Hire a bike in Bright and see its autumn colours and spring blossoms and sample the Alpine Valley’s distinctive cool climate wines. From Bright, take the C536 to Tawonga Gap, the C531 to Mt Beauty, Bogong and Falls Creek. In winter, Falls Creek is a great place for snow play, or in summer take in the beauty of the Alps and adventure activities on the Bogong High Plains. Join the C543 to Anglers Rest for some of the best fishing in Victoria. Continue to Omeo, once a lawless gold mining town. (Note: The Falls Creek-Anglers Rest section of this drive is closed during winter)
